How do I use AgentUtil.exe?

This article illustrates using %SYSTEMROOT%\UEAgent\AgentUtil.exe to backup and restore Leaf Agent and Agent Settings data.

AgentUtil.exe Backup

When Leaf Agents are installed, "registration" creates identification data in the registry on both the Master Agent and Leaf Agent machines. If a Master Agent machine is re-installed, existing Leaf Agent registration data on the Master Agent is lost, and communication between the newly installed Master Agent and existing Leaf Agents cannot occur. AgentUtil.exe is useful for backing up and restoring the Leaf Agent data on the Master Agent so that the newly installed Master Agent will be able to communicate with existing Leaf Agents.

Without an AgentUtil.exe backup, re-installation of the Master Agent will require re-installation of all existing Leaf Agents that were "owned" by the re-installed Master Agent.  Leaf Agents owned by another Master Agent would be unaffected.

To launch the utility, do "Start > Run > %SYSTEMROOT%\UEAgent\AgentUtil.exe" or go to the UEAgent folder and double-click on AgentUtil.exe.

Backup is selected by default. Click Next.

Next, you browse to a location to write your backup file by clicking on the button with dots. Identify a backup file name. For example, If you use "master" as the file name to save, you'll end up with master.uea ... this is the file you will restore later.

If you click the "..." button (above), you can browse for a location to create the backup file (below). In this example the master.uea file is being created in the UpdateEXPERT download directory.

Click Save (above) and your full path of the backup file will be displayed. Enter and confirm a password. The password will be mandatory when you restore the data to the new Master Agent. Do not lose or forget the password.

Click Next. "The agent data is successfully exported" indicates a successful backup.

AgentUtil.exe Restore

To restore Leaf Agent and Agent Settings data, click Restore then Next.

Locate your file, and enter your Password. Note that "Master agent host" will be filled in. An IP address can also be entered in the "Master agent host" field.  AgentUtil.exe will automatically propagate the hostname or IP-address to Leaf Agents.

Click Next. You will get status information indicating if the restore was successful.
