This article describes removing all UpdateEXPERT 6.x directories, files, and registry entries. If SecurityEXPERT is installed, you should uninstall SecurityEXPERT first, which will remove files from the UpdateEXPERT directories, and remove the MSDE database used for storing templates and policies.
Uninstallation is usually done to resolve first-time installation issues (Leaf-Agents typically not deployed yet). A complete UpdateEXPERT Uninstall guarantees that upon re-installing the product, no prior configuration data is inadvertently used.
Uninstallation is also done to decommission a Master-Agent machine. If you are using Leaf-Agents, see the warning below and make a determination about contacting tech-support!
|
IMPORTANT!: If you have existing Leaf-Agents, and are uninstalling a Master-Agent you may want to call Tech-Support for consultation. Uninstalling/Reinstalling UpdateEXPERT 6.0 will require that all your Leaf-Agents be re-installed to re-establish communication with the Master. In later versions of UpdateEXPERT (6.1 and later) AgentUtil.exe can be used to backup/restore Leaf-Agent connection data. If you are uninstalling/reinstalling an UpdateEXPERT Master-Agent for some reason, we encourage you to call Tech-Support to double-check what you are doing first. |
If you have a user-specified patch download directory (see File | Agent | Settings | Transfers tab), make a note of where this location is. It is your choice as to whether you would delete the patch repository or not, as it depends on whether you intend to continue using the downloaded patches for deployment with another Master-Agent.
If using AgentUtil.exe to backup Leaf-Agent data, do it now before proceeding with the un-install.
Exit the UpdateEXPERT console, then do "Start | Run | Cmd" to get a prompt and do "> net stop ueagent". Use Task Manager to make sure all UpdateEXPERT processes are gone... this means there should be none of the following:
UEAgent
UEActor
UELog
UEFile
If any of these processes are shown, end them.
Do "Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs"
Highlight UpdateEXPERT6 components and click on Change/Remove. Select "Remove", remove all installed features and go completely through the uninstall process.
Check for and delete the following files and directories, including sub-directories. %SYSTEMROOT% is typically C:\WINNT for NT or Win2k, and C:\WINDOWS for XP.
%SYSTEMROOT%\UEAgent directory. Typically, leftover files include downloaded patches and a variety of *.dll and *.exe files.
%SYSTEMROOT%\UpdateEXPERT.INI, if present.
%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\codec4ue3dbs.dll ... this DLL file is an additional database file created for improved performance in UpdateEXPERT 6.3
C:\Program Files\St Bernard Software\UpdateEXPERT6 directory. Typically, the leftovers include *.db files
C:\Program Files\Common Files\UpdateEXPERT directory. Typically, the leftovers include some *.dll and *.log files.
C:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Application Data\UEData.ued, if present.
C:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Local Settings\Temp\UEReport*.html …; note that there may be several different reports like machine, conformance etc.
The Registry should be clean, but it is good to check it.
Launch regedit.exe or regedt32.exe; delete these keys (if present):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\St. Bernard Software\UpdateEXPERT (Master-Agent Data)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\St. Bernard Software\UEJobs (Temp Data)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\St. Bernard Software\UpdateEXPERT (Console Settings)
Note: If you re-install UpdateEXPERT, be sure to disable any virus-scanning software first.
